The outside view

A high profile community-based organisation became aware of discussion and allegations on social media of a culture of racism and discrimination. The funding body asked the board to investigate. The board was conscious of the sensitivity and complexity to questions of culture and power. Directors wanted to be confident that the investigation addressed both the legal governance requirements and the experience of employees . They sought an independent view and assessment of the situation, to support the group, exercise effective governance and to respond to the concerns of external stakeholders.

Mārama Group provided a rapid benchmarked assessment of the context and basis of the allegations and required intervention or remediation. This was useful in supporting the executive team to handle the issue carefully and to support the governance group to have insight to the questions at play. The scoping recommendations proposed a range of cultural and system changes to establish and monitor an equitable and safe workplace.
